SUSPENDED TERRITORIES AND WINDOWS OF OPPORTUNITIES AFTER CENTRAL ITALY EARTHQUAKE OF 2016

2019

Nowadays cities are experiencing an unprecedented rate of growth, most of peripheral rural regions are facing shrinking phenomena. While globalization promotes strong economic concentrations in a few urban centers, peripherical regions are negatively affected by decreasing population and impending impoverishment, due to the lack of policy and the failure to develop and maintain rural economies. Although natural disasters accelerate these trends, the shock created by these unexpected events may generate a “window of opportunity”, linked both to risk-reduction processes and to transition paths towards more desirable futures. Earthquakes, more than other natural disasters, destabilize local sy…

Wow! They really like celeriac! Kindergarten teachers' experiences of an intervention to increase 1-year-olds' acceptance of vegetables

2021

Abstract Exposure to varied foods in early life is important for short- and long-term health and development. Strategically introducing toddlers to new vegetables is not a common practice in Norwegian kindergartens. Therefore, we developed, conducted, and evaluated a web-based cluster randomised kindergarten intervention, Pre-schoolers’ Food Courage 2.0. The purpose of the current qualitative study was to explore kindergarten teachers' experience of implementing this intervention and what they thought facilitated the positive impact of the intervention reported in the quantitative evaluation. Ten individual telephonic interviews with kindergarten teachers who took part in the intervention s…

Introduction

2019

Timely and appropriate medical care can significantly influence the health of a newborn. When considering how to best deliver such care, we must first note that each human represents the result of a balance between nature (genetics) and nurture (environment). Importantly, while most of our care is centered on in utero development, the preconception period is also a time at which genetic and environmental factors can interact to exert effects that ultimately influence the health of the future offspring. In this issue's Views and Reviews, we provide data to suggest that modern preconceptional care should become a key component of reproductive medicine, not only to improve implantation and pre…

Hypertension in Children and Adolescents

2019

During the last few decades, hypertension in children and adolescents has gained ground in cardiovascular medicine, thanks to the progress made in several areas of pathophysiological and clinical research. The prevalence in school-aged children appears to be increasing, perhaps as a result of the increased prevalence of obesity in the last years. Despite evidence of an increasing prevalence of hypertension in the young, the consequences of early onset hypertension are poorly established and often overlooked. In children hypertension can be caused by multiple conditions, and therefore it is warranted to consider a wide range of differential diagnoses and to search for definable causes of hyp…

Childhood trauma and substance use underlying psychosis: a systematic review

2020

[EN] Background: Schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSD) are mental diseases caused by a combination of genetic susceptibility and a number of environmental factors. Among these factors, the role of traumatic events suffered in childhood, as well as that of substance use, have been of particular research interest. Objectives: To conduct a systematic review to clarify whether there is an interaction between childhood trauma and substance use related to the diagnosis or symptoms of SSD. It was also the objective of this review to collate the associations that may exist between the three variables of the study (trauma, substance use and psychosis). Methods: We conducted a systematic search resu…
